A project that shows how glass can be an essential element in redesigning the skylines of the most modern cities, defining the possibility of creating iconic buildings.
The new face of the building will become a highly recognizable feature of the urban panorama, sporting a seemingly unbroken surface with a silk-screen printed opaline double glazing, backlit at night.
Designed using composition language that is deliberately simple, the facade uses materials that characterize the geometry of the set, creating an elegant dance between the texture choices for building skin definition, scale sizes and ratios and, above all, refraction of light.
2000 Ross will be a building “inspiring for the generations to come”, as the city’s Mayor said at the unveiling event.
Located in the Arts District, it will serve the area where other masterpieces have been built (the Nasher Sculpture Center by RPBW, the Winspear Opera House by Norman Foster, Museum of Natural Science by Morphosis, the Trammel Crow Center by SOM, THE Meyerson Symphony Center by I.M. Pei, the Hall Arts by HKS and the Dallas Museum of Art by Ed Barnes).
As such, it will collaborate in transforming the neighborhood from dark, gloomy and static to active, bright, and uplifting.
While addressing the growing need for parking in the city’s congested business district, the client took the opportunity to create a shimmering and iconic building that acts as a connection. A 2,700-space parking garage will support a revitalized 50-story tower across the street, while 40,000 Sq Ft of street level retail space will serve to attract new tenants, encouraging economic growth in the surrounding area.
The first phase, completed in 2018, includes the garage and retail spaces where AZA INT is involved. Future phases will include towers with a 225-room hotel and 350,000 Sq Ft of residential space.
Designed by HKS, the building design presents timeless, clean aesthetics through its use of geometry, texture, scale and light.
AZA INT has been commissioned to build the 70,000 Sq Ft custom facade with angled 26’ fins that characterize the outside of the garage. 1,440 panes of angled, white glass create the garage facade, while backlighting creates a memorable, shimmering effect.
Installed by our local partner Haley Greer, the apparently unbroken surface have a silk-screen printed opaline double glazing, and it is a highly-recognizable feature of the urban panorama.
The interplay and the spirit of innovation and partnership between the players involved were crucial in this project.
The building is designed to achieve LEED certification, a priority for HKS and its environmentally conscious client. Compared to standard baseline requirements, the lighting and systems selected permit a significant 33% energy saving.
